I have recently been questioning if God is real.

Father Kevin:

I have recently been questioning if God is real.  I want to believe in God but can’t wrap my mind around it.  Please help? – Patrick

Dear Patrick:

You’re wrestling with one of life’s ultimate questions to which there are no easy glib answers. God is the ultimate mystery.  However we have evidence of God’s existence in every breath if we are attentive and open.

Father Robert Barron has a worthwhile reflection on your question:

Here he speaks of the hunger of each human heart that can only be satisfied by God.  We often imagine ourselves satisfied by things that don’t last, but that is the problem, once we have had our fill of them, we are still hungry.  St Augustine put it this way: “You have made us for yourself O Lord and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”  He wasn’t just being pious but was speaking a simple truth.

With our mind we can argue and philosophise about God’s existence.  With our heart and imagination we can encounter God who is ultimately unknowable.  Through Jesus, God has given us a face and voice so that we can engage personally with Him in our own time and language.

I pray for you as you continue your exploration. –  Father Kevin
